Keith wrenched the carriage hard to the left as a fifty-foot wall of water rose up before them. He mashed the pedal to the floor, the carriage humming beneath him as he sped along the wave, half-turning the other way as he pushed to escape before it bore down on them.

A chunk of frozen water slammed into the tail end of the carriage, throwing them off course, and Keith allowed the carriage to drop as he flashed out from the wall’s shadow. Thousands of tons of water crashed down behind them as he wrenched the wheel straight, returning to their earlier heading.

“You’re off by 10 degrees,” Tac said as a bolt of lightning the size of a mountain covered the sky, the crackling lines of electricity forking into hundreds of branches and lasting a solid four seconds before vanishing from view.

“That is terrifying,” Bob squeaked from his hiding spot beneath the back row of seats.

“Really makes you feel small and insignificant, doesn’t it?” Selena said, watching the sky with a look of awe clear on her face.

Keith was sweating as he pulled the wheel again, avoiding a massive chunk of ice that had been hurled up by the churning waves. They’d been going like this for the last hour, Tac’s corrections and predictions keeping them from wrecking more than a dozen times.

This carriage was built to take a beating, but the All-Terrain Mode wasn’t built for this. The problem was that the Ultra-Terrain Mode sucked up power more than twice as fast. Seeing as the carriage had only gotten a bit under three hours of charge time, it meant he would have about 32 hours of total use when it came to that mode. On top of that, their speed would be drastically reduced.

Even if he factored in the bonuses from his All-Terrain Psycho, their total run time would only be around 54 hours. As for their top speed, they wouldn’t be able to go much faster than 56 miles per hour, and with all the backtracking and maneuvering around waves, Tac was shaving half their available distance off, as they couldn’t travel in a straight line.

In short, with Ultra-Terrain Mode, they would be able to travel a total distance of around 1,500 miles, which might not take them clear of the storm. On the other hand, the All-Terrain Mode had a full 100-hour charge and a top speed of 144 miles per hour. This meant that with the bonuses, he had a charge of 170 hours and a top speed of over 194 miles per hour.

With that kind of speed and distance available, Tac only needed to reduce their distance by around 20%, which meant a total range of roughly 26,000 miles, which was significantly higher than their alternative.

At this point, the question was whether both the carriage and Keith himself could handle it. Driving for 12 hours straight was exhausting, and driving for 12 hours straight in this storm was mind-numbing. Twelve hours would only move them around
